Adaptable for lots of ages

For this craft children poke holes through the dots (I printed it on cardstock), then use yarn to “sew” around the mitten shape. The result is a hands-on craft that feels like sewing and using real and possibly unique tools, which is always a win to my kids.

I tested this craft with my 3-year-old daughter, and it worked beautifully with support. With small adjustments, it also works well for older preschoolers, kindergarteners, and even early elementary kids.

What You’ll Need

This is a print-and-go activity with just a few supplies:

  • The free printable mitten sewing pages
  • Cardstock (highly recommended for durability)
  • A pencil, push pin or the like for poking holes
  • Yarn
  • Kid-friendly plastic sewing needles – Optional Alternative: Tape wrapped around the end of the yarn

I was able to complete the project using taped yarn instead of a needle, so it does work. However, it is harder to manipulate and requires more hand strength and control. For younger children, I strongly recommend plastic sewing needles, but the taped-yarn method is a good low-cost backup if needed.

Two Printable Options for Different Skill Levels

To make this activity flexible, I created two versions of the printable:

  • Easier Version: One large mitten
Best for younger preschoolers or first-time sewers.

  • More Challenging Version: Two mittens
Great for kindergarteners or children ready for more detailed work.

Both versions can be used in multiple ways depending on the child’s abilities.

How to Use the Mitten Sewing Printable

Step 1: Print & Prepare

Print the pages on cardstock for best results. The thicker paper holds up better during poking and sewing.

Step 2: Poke the Holes

Have children use a pencil or similar tool to poke through each dot.

  • Younger children can poke a few holes at a time
  • Older kids can complete the full outline independently
  • This step alone is excellent fine motor practice

Step 3: Thread the Yarn

Thread yarn onto a plastic needle, or tape the end of the yarn to make it stiff.

Explain that stitches should be pulled snug, but not too tight, so the paper doesn’t tear.

Step 4: Sew the Mitten

Children can:

  • Follow the dot-to-dot outline
  • Skip holes for a looser stitch
  • Create their own sewing pattern

There’s no wrong way to do it. The goal is hand-eye coordination and confidence.

Easy Ways to Adapt This Craft

One of the best things about this activity is how easily it can be adapted:

For Younger Preschoolers

  • Color the mitten only
  • Poke holes with adult help
  • Sew just part of the outline

For Older Preschoolers & Kindergarten

  • Complete all hole poking independently
  • Sew the entire mitten
  • Practice pulling yarn evenly between stitches

Extension Ideas

  • Color the mitten before sewing
  • Decorate with crayons or markers
  • Create a “matching pair” using the two-mitten page
  • Use different yarn colors to make patterns

You can even use the page as a simple dot-to-dot or coloring activity without sewing if needed.

A Classroom-Friendly Winter Craft

This mitten sewing activity is:

  • Low prep
  • Budget friendly
  • Adaptable for mixed-age classrooms
  • Easy to store and reuse

It works well for winter themes, fine motor centers, quiet time, or small groups. Kids love the feeling of “real sewing,” and adults love how much skill-building is packed into one simple printable.
