If you’re looking for a winter craft that’s simple, and classroom-friendly – this Winter Cardinal Feather Craft is a perfect fit. Cardinals are iconic winter birds, and this project gives kids a chance to explore color, texture, creativity, and fine-motor skills without any Santa, religious or holiday themes.
I created a printable cardinal outline where the bird is fully drawn like a coloring page, but with missing wings and tail feathers. Young artists get to “finish” the bird using coloring tools, craft feathers, tissue paper, or cut-paper shapes. It’s quick to set up, adaptable for all skill levels, and absolutely adorable on display boards.
I made this with my 3-year-old daughter, and she kept calling the wingless bird a “naked bird” — she was determined to help him get dressed! Her determination and giggles told me everything: kids LOVE this project.
