When our Toddler Time group picked the letter X for the week, we quickly realized something, there just aren’t many everyday objects that start with the letter X, especially ones a preschooler would recognize or have at home. But with a little creativity, we came up with a list that includes both real “X” words and more kid-friendly options that still emphasize the X sound in a meaningful way.
Real “X” Words
These are genuine words that begin with the letter X. While many are scientific or advanced, they can be fun to introduce if your child is curious — or if you’re just trying to impress during circle time!
- X-ray – Show a printout or photo of a skeleton or real X-ray image.
- Xylophone – A colorful toy version is perfect for play and music time.
- Xerox – A copy or copied paper (can be fun to say and to show how paper is duplicated).
- Xigua – A type of watermelon commonly found in Africa and Asia.
- Xenops – A small bird found in Central and South America (show a picture).
- Xenon – A gas used in lights; not toddler-friendly, but fun for science lovers.
- Xylograph – A woodblock print (you could do a stamp craft to mimic it).
- X-ray fish – A small tropical fish with a see-through body, show a photo or toy.
Everyday Words with a Strong X Sound
These words don’t start with the letter X, but they contain the strong “ks” sound that helps kids learn how X sounds in real life. Best of all, you’re much more likely to have these items at home or in your classroom:
- Box
- Fox
- Axe
- Ox
- Six
- Mix
- Max (great if there’s a Max in class!)
- Wax
- Fix
- Taxi
- T-Rex
- Axolotl (if you have a toy or book)
- Extra (stickers, crayons, etc.)
- Exit (sign or toy door)
- Tux (dress-up clothes or penguin pic!)
Why These Words Make More Sense for Preschoolers
The truth is, the letter X is almost never used at the start of everyday words, especially ones your preschooler knows. But learning to hear and say the X sound (the “ks” combo) is just as valuable! That’s why it’s helpful to focus on familiar, tactile, or silly objects like a box or a fox. They help kids connect the sound to real-world items and build early phonics awareness in a developmentally appropriate way.
So if your toddler shows up with a toy T-Rex or a toolbox, you’re doing it right.
