Let’s jump right in!

Step 1: Trace and Cut

To start, lay the pattern pieces on your felt and trace around them using your marker. A sharpie works best on felt for good visibility. Remember to flip the pattern for any pieces that need to be traced twice, ensuring they match up when sewn together. Once traced, carefully cut out your felt pieces, trimming any marker lines that may be visible. (Hang onto scraps; they can be great for stuffing!)

Now it’s time to give our pegasus some eyes! You can either stitch a simple “knot eye” with embroidery floss or use small felt pieces in a vibrant color.

Option 1: Knot Eye

  1. Make a knot at the end of your floss and poke the needle through from the back of the pegasus body to the front where you want the eye.
  2. Secure it with a knot stitch by pulling the thread tight, looping the floss, and pulling it through.
  3. Repeat for the second eye, ensuring that both eyes are tucked neatly inside the pegasus’s body when placed together.

Option 2: Detailed Eye
For a more detailed eye, use standard thread instead of embroidery floss. Create a loop knot and start sewing from the back of the pegasus face. Make tiny stitches, creating a simple shape before adding eyelashes.

Add the Legs

Next, it’s time to attach the legs. Place the back leg pieces on either side of the body. Secure each leg using a knot stitch with your needle and thread. Repeat this process for the front legs.

Step 3: Start Sewing the Body

Begin at the back leg of your pegasus. Knot your starting stitch behind one of the legs. Use a blanket stitch around the bottom of the body, stopping where you want to attach the tail.

How to Blanket Stitch: To make a blanket stitch, put your needle through both pieces of fabric, and pause before pulling it all the way through.  Pull the end of your thread (Where it came of your last stitch) around the top of your needle, then pull your needle fully through the fabric.  Move down your felt a little bit, and poke the needle back through on the same side as you started the previous stitch, and again loop the tail end of the thread over the top of the needle before you pull it all the way out of your felt.  Keep repeating this process, ensuring your stitches are evenly spaced and pulling tight, until you reach the end of your stitching line.

Step 4: Attach the Tail

When you reach the bottom of the pegasus, it’s time to add the tail. Place the tail piece between the two body pieces and sew it in place using a running stitch.

How to do a Running Stitch: To make a running stitch, begin by pushing the needle up through the fabric from the back to the front, pulling it all the way through. Then, move the needle a little forward and poke it back down through the fabric making sure to leave a small space. Pull it through until the thread is tight. Next, poke the needle back up through the fabric right where you came down so it makes a little stitch. Keep going back and forth, moving forward a little each time and sticking the needle down and then back up, making sure the stitches are nice and straight. Continue until you reach the end of where you want to stitch!

Step 5: Attach the Mane and Wings

Continue with a blanket stitch around the top of the pegasus’s body. Before reaching the back, insert the mane felt piece between the two body layers. Use a running stitch to secure the mane in place. For the wings, position them between the body layers with the mane in the middle of them and secure them with a running stitch.

Continue with the running stitch all the way up the pegasus’s back, and when you reach the ears do the running stitch along the bottom of them, rather than sewing up and around the points of them.

Step 6: Sewing the Face

Keep using the blanket stitch for the pegasus’s face, and neck, adding small amounts of stuffing as you go to keep the shape while you sew.

Step 7: Fill and Finish

Leave a small opening near one of the front legs to fill your pegasus with stuffing. Use small pieces of polyester stuffing or even tiny felt scraps. If the head area is tricky, you can use the back of a pencil to push the stuffing in. When your pegasus is as fluffy as you like, use the blanket stitch to close up the opening and tie a snug knot where you started.

And there you go! You have your very own cuddly felt pegasus, made by you! This fun project helps kids learn basic sewing skills while sparking creativity. Happy sewing and enjoy showing off your new winged friend!  ❤️
