Polar bear craft for preschool and kindergarten featuring free printable templates, cotton ball sensory art, and easy winter craft ideas for kids.

If you’re looking for a quick, low-prep winter craft that works just as well in a busy classroom as it does at the kitchen table, this Polar Bear Craft is a favorite. It’s simple to set up, easy to adapt for different ages, and flexible enough that kids can make it their own.

I designed several printable polar bear templates so teachers and parents can choose the level that works best for their kids. Whether you’re working with preschoolers who just want to color, or kindergarten and first graders ready for cutting, gluing, and adding texture, this craft grows with them.

It’s also completely secular and winter-themed, making it perfect for classrooms that want seasonal fun without holiday characters.

Winter polar bear craft with cotton ball body and yarn scarf, made using printable templates for preschool and early elementary kids.

Supplies You May Want (Choose What Fits Your Version)

You don’t need all of these — just pick what matches your plan.

  • Polar bear printable (free download below)
  • Crayons, markers, or colored pencils
  • White crayons or white paint
  • Blue printer paper
  • Glue sticks or liquid glue
  • Cotton balls
  • Scissors
  • Yarn, paper strips, or fabric scraps (optional scarf)

Polar Bear Craft Options (From Easy to More Involved)

Option 1: Color the Bear (Easiest Version)

Perfect for preschool, toddlers, or quick winter centers.

  • Print the bear template
  • Kids color it however they like

This version sparks great conversations because kids can color their bear however they like, and if you want to extend the craft you can ask the kids questions about their bear.  Did they make a polar bear, a black bear, or a rainbow bear? What do they think their bear likes to do? What does it like to eat? How does it play? etc.

It’s a fun way to introduce real bears that come in different colors and live in different habitats, or pretend bears and let them make up information about their own unique bear.

Option 2: Colored Paper + White Crayons or Paint

Still simple, but adds a creative twist.

  • Print the bear on colored paper (blue works especially well for winter)
  • Kids color using white crayons or paint

This creates a striking winter look and gives kids practice controlling lighter colors on darker backgrounds.

Option 3: White Bear + Colored Background

  • Make a fun wintery background with crayons or paint or whatever you have on hand.
  • Cut the bear out
  • Glue it to your custom background

This gives a chance to go full color with the background and make a fun wintery scene then add a little prop bear on top.

Option 4: Fluffy Polar Bear (More Hands-On)

Great for kindergarten and first grade, or for kids who love sensory crafts.

  • Print the bear body on blue paper
  • Kids paint it white or cover it with glue and ripped-up cotton balls for a fun texture craft
  • Print the bear head on white paper
  • Kids color it (optional), cut it out, and glue it on top of the fluffy body

We tried this version and added a yarn scarf before gluing on the head — the kids loved it. Scarves can also be made from:

  • Paper strips
  • Fabric scraps
  • Tissue paper
  • Even drawn on with markers
