Free Kindergarten Literacy Curriculum Week 5 - All Things Letter D, including guided lessons, free printable worksheets, sensory bins, and craft and activity ideas

Welcome to Week 5. This is your low-prep, print-and-go Letter D plan. Each day includes a quick 5-minute mini lesson, one simple activity, and free printables that support it.

Best for: kindergarten centers, homeschool, preschool review, and busy parents who want a simple plan without a lot of prep.

Daily Mini Lessons + Printables

Day 1: Meet Letter D

Mini Lesson Script (5 minutes)

  • Point to D and d. Say: “This is letter D. It can look like D or d, but it is the same letter.”
  • Say: “D says /d/ like dog.” (Have kids repeat 2–3 times.)
  • Show 3 picture examples: dog, dinosaur, donut, drum. Ask: “Do you hear /d/ at the start?”

Do This (2 minutes): Drum for D. Show picture cards or say simple words aloud and invite students to tap like a drum on their knees or desk if the word starts with /d/. Try: dog (tap), dino (tap), sun (quiet), donut (tap), cat (quiet), drum (tap).

Teacher Tip: Keep it short and playful.

Day 2: Write Letter D

Mini Lesson Script (5 minutes)

  • Say: “Today we are going to write letter D the right way.”
  • Uppercase D: “Start at the top, line down, then curve around and back to the top.”
  • Lowercase d: “Start at the top, line down, the from the middl all around.”

Do This (2 minutes): Desk Trace D. Students air-write a big D, then trace D on the table with their finger while saying: “Line down, then curve around.”

Optional: If kids need extra fine motor practice, add a simple trace-and-color D page.

Day 3: Hear the /d/ Sound

Mini Lesson Script (5 minutes)

  • Say: “Today we are listening for the sound /d/ at the beginning of words.”
  • Say: “When you hear /d/ at the start, pretend to beat a drum with your hands.”
  • Try a few examples: dog (yes), dino (yes), drum (yes), sun (no), cat (no), donut (yes).

Do This (2 minutes): Grab the D sound. Show picture cards and ask: “What is this? Say it slowly. Do you hear /d/ at the beginning?” Students can pretend to grab the sound with their hand if it starts with D.

Day 4: Centers + Review

By today, students have:

  • Met letter D
  • Practiced writing D
  • Heard the /d/ sound

Today is about strengthening and applying those skills independently.

Mini Lesson (2–3 minutes)

Say:

“This week we learned about the letter D.”
“Tell me the letter name. Tell me the sound.”
“Show me uppercase D in the air. Show me lowercase d in the air.”
“Can you make one straight line with your arm?”
“Can you make one big curve with your other arm?”

Pick 2 centers and rotate. 

Center Menu (choose 2)

  • Center 1: Circle All the D’s
  • Center 2: Dot Marker D
  • Center 3: Themed Tracing Page
  • Center 4: Write, Trace and Color
  • Center 5: Sensory or craft extension

Center 1 Printable: Circle All the D’s
Why this matters: Letter D can look slightly different in different books and fonts. This activity helps build flexible letter recognition for future reading.
