Daily Mini Lessons + Printables
Day 1: Meet Letter I
Mini Lesson Script (5 minutes)
- Point to I and i. Say: “This is letter I. It can look like I or i, but it is the same letter.”
- Say: “I can make more than one sound. Sometimes it says /ĭ/ like igloo. Sometimes it says /ī/ like ice cream.”
- Show 3 picture examples: igloo, insect, ice cream, ink. Ask: “Do you hear short i or long I at the start?”
Do This (2 minutes): I Sound Sort. Show picture cards or say simple words aloud and invite students to show one finger for short i and two fingers for long I. Try: igloo (one), insect (one), ice cream (two), ink (one), ivy (two).
Teacher Tip: Keep it light and simple. You do not need children to master both sounds today. Just help them notice that letter I can be a little tricky.

Day 2: Write Letter I
Mini Lesson Script (5 minutes)
- Say: “Today we are going to write letter I the right way.”
- Uppercase I: “Start at the top, line across, line down, line across at the bottom.”
- Lowercase i: “Line down, then add a dot.”
Do This (2 minutes): Dot the I. Students air-write a big uppercase I, then trace I on the table with their finger while saying: “Across, down, across.” Then make one short line in the air and tap above it for the lowercase i dot.

Day 3: Hear the I Sounds
Mini Lesson Script (5 minutes)
- Say: “Today we are listening for the sounds letter I can make at the beginning of words.”
- Say: “Sometimes I says /ĭ/ like igloo. Sometimes I says /ī/ like ice cream.”
- Try a few examples: igloo (short i), insect (short i), ink (short i), ice cream (long I), island (long I), sun (not I).
Do This (2 minutes): Short I / Long I Move. Show picture cards and ask: “What is this? Say it slowly. Do you hear short i or long I?” Students touch their shoulders for short i and their head for long I.

“Can you tell me one I word?”
Pick 2 centers and rotate.
