Show 3 picture examples: yo-yo, yellow, yarn, yak. Ask: “Do you hear /y/ at the start?”
Do This (2 minutes): Yawn for Y. Show picture cards or say simple words aloud and invite students to pretend to yawn or point to themselves if the word starts with /y/. Try: yo-yo (yes), yellow (yes), sun (quiet), yarn (yes), dog (quiet), yak (yes).
Teacher Tip: Keep it short and playful.

Uppercase Y: “Slant down, slant down, then line down.”
Lowercase y: “Little line down, little line down, then tail down.”
Do This (2 minutes): Y Shape Practice. Students air-write a big uppercase Y, then trace Y on the table with their finger while saying: “Down, down, then down.” Then make the smaller shape and tail for lowercase y.
