I recently came across a beautiful idea on TikTok from a creator named @savannahholt10. I don’t know if she originated the concept or was simply another kind soul sharing something meaningful, but her video is what sparked something in me.
As a mom of four young-ish kids, birthdays are a big deal in our house. We bake cakes, we hang balloons, we sing too loud, we celebrate each child for exactly who they are. Those little traditions are some of the brightest moments in our family’s life.
But the reality is that many families don’t have the resources to celebrate birthdays the way they might hope to. A huge portion of people experiencing food insecurity are children, and the thought of a child not getting a birthday celebration, or a parent having to silently choose between groceries and making their child feel special, just hurts my heart.
That’s why this idea resonated so deeply.
A Birthday in a Box is small, simple, inexpensive, and deeply human.
