I recently came across a beautiful idea on TikTok from a creator named @savannahholt10. I donât know if she originated the concept or was simply another kind soul sharing something meaningful, but her video is what sparked something in me.
As a mom of four young-ish kids, birthdays are a big deal in our house. We bake cakes, we hang balloons, we sing too loud, we celebrate each child for exactly who they are. Those little traditions are some of the brightest moments in our familyâs life.
But the reality is that many families donât have the resources to celebrate birthdays the way they might hope to. A huge portion of people experiencing food insecurity are children, and the thought of a child not getting a birthday celebration, or a parent having to silently choose between groceries and making their child feel special, just hurts my heart.
Thatâs why this idea resonated so deeply.
A Birthday in a Box is small, simple, inexpensive, and deeply human.
Itâs a way to make one special day a little easier for parents and a little more magical for kids.
So with huge enthusiasm from my children (who loved having a hand in every step), we created our own versions, and added a few personal touches to make them as accessible and joyful as possible.
Hereâs what we included in ours:
- A boxed cake mix
- A can of lemon-lime soda (so the cake can be made without eggs or oil)
- Frosting
- Birthday candles
- Balloons
- A disposable baking pan
- A simple instruction card so families know exactly what to do
I also created a free printable to explain the simple cake instructions, because I worried the can of soda might be confusing, I didnât want families thinking it was just a fun beverage (though if they have eggs and oil it certainly can be!) The printable makes the kit feel clear, intentional, and easy for anyone to use.

đ Why We Made These
My kids were over the moon excited to help because for us everything about birthday’s is just fun. They loved picking out birthday balloons, choosing cake and frosting combinations, and packing the bags with care.
What struck me most is how small the cost is compared to how big the impact can be. A few dollars can transform a stressful day into a celebration, a moment where a child feels seen and loved and a parent gets to feel like they can give their child something special.
Food insecurity touches millions of families, and often quietly.
A simple birthday kit wonât solve every hardship, but it does say:
âYour family matters. Your childâs joy matters. You deserve to celebrate.â
đ How to Assemble a âBirthday in a Boxâ
Hereâs what we put into each kit:
- Cake mix
- Frosting
- Birthday candles
- Balloons
- Disposable baking pan
- A can of lemon-lime soda

**A Note About Packaging
The disposable pans I bought came with plastic lids that felt extremely fragile. Rather than risk delivering broken lids, I placed the entire kit inside a large ziplock-style plastic bag. It kept everything neatly together and felt much sturdier for transporting and donating.

Using soda instead of eggs and oil is a long-loved âshortcut cakeâ recipe. It works beautifully, itâs inexpensive, and it means families donât need extra ingredients, no eggs, no oil, no milk.
Just pour, mix, bake, celebrate.
đ Where to Donate Your Kits
There are many places that may welcome these, but always call first to confirm their donation policies.
A few options include:
- Local food pantries
- Little Free Pantries or Blessing Boxes
- Community cupboards
- Schools (school counselors often quietly support families in need)
- Churches or community centers
- Womenâs shelters or family crisis centers
- Homeless shelters
Some locations can only accept unopened, shelf-stable items or have limits on packaged baked goods, so checking ahead makes everything smoother.
đ A Touch Someone Shared That I Loved
One incredibly thoughtful woman shared that she also made birthday kits, and she added a small gift card so parents can choose something special for their child. That idea touched me deeply. Even a $5â$10 card can give families agency and dignity during a moment thatâs meant to be joyful.

This project is simple, affordable, kid-friendly, and meaningful. It gave my children a hands-on way to practice kindness, and I hope it can do the same for yours.
